Attorney Profiles: Richard E. Hemming

Since his admission to the Wisconsin State Bar in 1965, Mr. Hemming has established a general practice with emphasis on courtroom trial work. He has been involved in more than 100 jury trials and has argued cases before the Wisconsin Supreme Court, Wisconsin Court of Appeals, Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Court of Military Appeals. Mr. Hemming is regularly requested to serve as arbitrator and mediator by attorneys and litigants. In addition to his regular practice, Mr. Hemming currently serves as the Independent Hearing Officer for the Janesville School District and Town Attorney for the Town of Janesville.

Mr. Hemming received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1962 and his law degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1965. He is a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin and the Rock County Bar Association. Mr. Hemming holds the highest possible performance and ethical standards rating from his peers.

Mr. Hemming believes the practice of law is a profession that demands the highest ethical standards. An attorney is a personal counselor, arbitrator, negotiator, advocate, and conciliator who has a responsibility to his client to deliver the best representation in every case. He believes that an attorney's job is not complete until he has attained the best legal result possible for his client.

Believing that service to the community is essential, Mr. Hemming served as President and Director of the Janesville Chamber of Commerce, now Forward Janesville, and served two terms on the Janesville School Board. Because of his dedication he has received the Distinguished Service Award from the Janesville Jaycees, the Janesville School Board Service Award, and the Chamber of Commerce President's Gavel Award. He has also received the Outstanding Service Award from the University of Wisconsin Law School.

A Janesville native, he and his wife, Colleen, have four children. Mr. Hemming is a member of the University of Wisconsin National "W" Club, having earned two varsity letters in baseball. Mr. Hemming enjoys bicycle racing and downhill skiing.
